The Far-Reaching Effects of a Fall – The New York Times

HiResDid you know that fall injuries requiring medical attention rise almost linearly from age 18 on, peaking at 115 per 1,000 adults 75 and older? Many factors of why those 75 and older are more likely to fall include:

  • osteoporosis
  • less coordinated gaits
  • slowed protective reflexes
  • sensory losses such as poor eyesight
  • drops in blood pressure when rising
  • medication side effects
  • loss of muscle tone and strength

Have YOU ever had a bad fall? If you have, you should know that fear is one the most common factors in falling again. If you are letting fear prevent you from staying active you will be losing muscle tone, bone density and the balance that you need to prevent you from falling again.

What do you do to prevent falls? What have you learned from having a bad fall? We would love to hear from you in the comment section below!
